05Hey, it's Matt here at Ottawa Blues Fest 2013. We've got a whole week of great videos coming up. Daily video blogs playing blues trivia with the whole winter bands. We're going to try and stump them. I went to a little souvenir store in Ottawa here this morning and picked up these little trinkets. So we'll play trivia from April Syrup. We've got a little beaver shot glass, a little crazy-eyed and moose thing, some Canadian stuff. At least that's for today's prize. We'll go to a store tomorrow and find some cool stuff. Today on the show we'll have Alex Claire, great guy. You might even know him from the Internet Explorer 9. Commercials, you know, that song too close, really cool. Also, chat with Australian band The Cat, Empire, Black Keys, our playing tonight, Jimmy. Eat world's playing tonight. We've got a whole bunch of great stuff. It's Ottawa Blues Fest. This is day one, baby. Welcome to the world! Welcome to the world! Welcome to the world! Welcome to the world! Welcome to the world! Okay, Cat, Empire.
00So what we're doing, it's a blues festival. You have a little bit of blues in your music. I hear it's kind of, it's there, I think. So we're doing blues trivia. I'm going to pitch you guys against each other. And we've got prizes. We've got some prizes. Because it's Canada, you guys are Aussies. We've got something a little different. For us. Prizes free, well, who, not for us, for one of you. Whoever wins. Okay, I love that. Because you're Australian, shock glass might be appropriate here. So we've got a beaver shock glass. We've also got some maple syrup. Maple syrup, very tasty. Or, crazy-eyed, moose fireman. What do you guys want to play for? Maple syrup. Maple syrup for me too. Maple syrup, all right. Put that bit right there. As musicians, I hope you get this one right.
46The most popular blues chord progression is known by what? 12 bar blues, 8 bar blues, or 16 bar blues. It's 12 bar blues. Correct, one point. You got to be quick on the drum, man. That's good. Blackie is the preferred guitar of which modern blues rock legend? Eric Clapton. Eric Clapton is correct. Tie game one one. Here's one. Who claimed to have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads? I'm a judge. Oh! Judge is Katrina. Who do you think got that first? She's giving it to you. I got a distance handicap. This is a distance handicap. It's hard to hear you from this far away. So two one. After the guitar, which instrument is most identified with blues?
34No, incorrect. Perhaps, um, Moutherpa's correct. What did you say? I'm Monica. I think he beat you with mouth. I think he said mouth before he got started. Which means two two. I love this. We're going down to the wire. Fifth question, tie game four, the maple syrup. Can you name blues legends nickname? His real name is McKinley Morgan Field. What blues legends real name is McKinley Morgan Field? The naughty one. Money waters is correct. Maple syrup. Amazing. Oh, he's shamed over there. It feels so bad for him. This is MSN.
29Internet Explorer 9, you. You guys. You guys. You guys. One you. I think the song sold the product is what I think it was. I think it's, uh, you scratched my back. I'll scratch yours kind of scenario. Yeah, worked out. You've been touring with the Mad Men. Have you gotten used to have you enjoyed living life on the road? Because it's a different lifestyle. I did. And then, uh... I did and then, okay. It's funny. I love touring. I love playing live. But, uh, you know, I got married last year. Oh, God. I do kind of miss like just chilling at home. Sometimes. So I said, like, I was my wife. It's pretty lonely out here. But, okay. When you get home and absence makes the hard place fun. Oh, that's nice. And I have a gift for her. Really? Well, potentially, if you can win. What we're doing is blues trivia because it's a blues festival. Okay. So, the cat empire guys already took the maple syrup prize. We have two. I'll let you choose if you get the trivia correct.
15We have Crazy Eyed Moose. Option number one. I like it. And then we also have. But I went out and still I'm just saying that. Okay. Okay. All right. And we have Beaver Shock glass or Espresso glasses. Katrina called it because that's a little classier. Or a pencil holder. So many options with the beaver thing. If you find a case, I think that's probably what it ends up being. You're going to play for the beaver. I'm going to play for the beaver. All right. Easy or hard, blues trivia. How well do you know your blues? All right. Here we go. Though the blues dates back to before this. Mummy Smith's Crazy Blues was the first blues recording in what year? 1915, 1920 or 1923. 1923. 1920. Ah, we got five questions though. We'll see. You only need to go to to win the prize. The four main style. This is a difficult one. The four main styles of blues are Delta, Chicago, Piedmont and Jump.
03Each one brought a different variations to the style of blues. One brought the slide guitar, one brought amplification, one brought horns, and one brought finger picking. I'm going to say just choose one and get it correct. Delta? Delta? Slide. Slide guitar is correct. I was going to be slide of finger picking. It wasn't going to be amplification. I'm going to go to slide. Why did you get that to me, man? It was just time to think about that. Really? Okay. I'm sorry. I was trying to help you. I want you to get the beaver thing. Take the point. Take the point. All right. I'm not going to help you anymore though. That's it. That was your one mulligan. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd play the blues brothers. Dan Aykroyd is a fine Canadian. Can you spell Aykroyd? AK. Take two. ACK. No.
49Take three. AYK? Keep going. AYK? AYK? Correct. Yes, that's a challenge. All right. True or false? In West African cultures, Blue Indigo was used to dye mourners garments blue to indicate suffering after the passing of a loved one. This is where the term the blues came from. I really wish it was true. I don't think it is. What are you on with? In the folds. It's true. You've already got two though. Blue's legend lead belly was... Oh, my hero. Really? What's on you? Oh, okay. Hang on a second. Tonight we decided after playing a festival last night, however, that because I play it exclusively, it might not work tonight. At a blues fest you're going to stay with the lead belly.
34No, it's such a shame. I love that song. I play it every single show. It's the first song I ever learned in guitar. Really? What song is it? Good night Irene. Oh, nice. Good tune. All right. Well, here we go. Let's see if you know this about him. He was discovered in an interesting place. A prison, a brothel or an orphanage? Prison. Alex Claire. Beaver Pencil holder. Almost done day one here at Blues Fest. It's been amazing. Seen so many great acts. Alex Claire, so funny. Can Empire. We're amazing as you saw. We got one more act to show you tonight. Tomorrow on the show she and him, as Zoe de Chanel's band, we also got Dawes and Frank Turner, the amazing Frank Turner. But one more, like I said, one more. The Headlining Act. Oh, yeah. It's time for the black keys.
