0:00on tour bus the guys from covalent and i'm doing well how are you guys great is the show is going to show here at the henry fonda and l.a. yeah i played before is first time uh... second time cool venue to play it's great it's great it's a great club nice room good time room the curtain on the stage which i like yeah it's kind of cool you don't see that every day yeah it's fun yeah very nice i heard um... you're to iris reading an interview i think it was you actually that uh... first record you made to move people this one you to make people move let's start the show off the song that makes people move you know let them here what uh... what you sound like what do you want to hear yeah that makes people move does to know and really wins
4:07you just heard no one really win sitting on the tour bus with the guys from covalent so album sounds a lot fuller than the first one i mean musically more produced stuff like that was that an intention when you started making up the record you almost said over produce this album it's not over produced that's the slip but it's not was more produced in the first record it is you're right uh... oddly enough is the same studio same uh... production team as in uh... the band and matt goldman i think we had matured as musicians and songwriters and producers as well as met our producer i think had grown in his his engineering capabilities yeah was he someone you grew up with is that you have to put them or was someone you can just have them and i mean i mean i met uh... about
4:54gosh five years ago i met matt he was playing a band that played at my college uh... florida southern college in lakeland florida and uh... he had he was talking to me uh... i mean i had a band and he was talking you know trying to get me to come record studio up in atlanta and uh... his uh... he started naming off a couple records that he'd done and oddly enough i had just uh... been listening to two records that he had you know recorded and i had you know note taken note of production in particular and really liked it so i was except you know ecstatic when i found out that he did did these records and so
5:41so yeah that uh... we kept in touch and when it came time for us to start making records we went with him to work with you on the next one as well uh... yeah we have been this will be our this will be the fifth time our fifth session you know separate session we've done three and done two full-length records and two e-p's and then one other one off actually two other one off sessions of just like single song things so this will be the sixth session cool we start tracking and i know you released the covers are coming between the last two records you plan to do that again this time something like that will something of the fans between uh... not at this point probably not because uh... because we're going to crank out another record kind of quick i think or really yeah we got the itch we're starting june first
6:28no way so what's that like probably november release on like that uh... over yes yes well last day of october halloween yes so halloween theme the halloween title and the jackaliner uh... ghost couple of uh... and ji part one school title how come in motion speaking of titles in motion uh... it was a little bit of songs and i uh... i don't know i like to hide the way it sounded i don't remember exactly what it came from i know it came from a longer title with that had in motion in it but i don't remember exactly what the longer title was it was a shortening of a title
7:14and just happened to have a little scrub uh... no it was just a title i think i got it from a book or something oh okay cool heard you there's a lot more classical influence and you're mentioning the deals in one interview and how much they influenced you you guys weren't listening that kind of stuff the first time around are you still listening that is i can influence this new record too uh... yeah i'm sure uh... you probably listen a lot more beetles a little bit further than for the first right i listen to the i gained uh... little appreciation slash obsession with the beetles frider uh... maybe like six months before we started recording in motion or so so it definitely had a an effect on what i did what i did on that record and i'm sure it will also on the next record
8:02do you mean in terms of lyrics or maladies uh... prime maladies mostly and and sounds uh... this production like little uh... the tricks and their sounds and uh... you hear the melatonin the noise you see too often yeah totally what was my last song what do you guys want to hear off the new record um... how about don't slow down good to it's a you agree yes
12:36i can hear the guys from cople and you're sure don't slow down you got a new drummer in the band i heard there was a whole bunch of different trying set up his kid take down his kid try different things what was one of the coolest things like one of the most invented things you think you did with this kid uh... well them definitely the most memorable one was we uh... we built a debt what we call a dead room we had a bunch of packing blankets like moving blankets and there are rafters up in the up in the ceiling of the studio so we hung these blankets and so i have pleasant memories of all us all up on ladders hanging blankets around the drums and putting rags on the drums to make him just real dead be the last sounds um... that was definitely the most fun and most um...
13:22i don't know that's a very very fond memory of mine was cool because it worked it was something that we spent a lot of time setting up and then the first you know hit on the drums you could tell that we had achieved what we were going for and that's always a well songs are cool uh... choose the one who loves you more the second track of the record which else actually wound up being my favorite song of the record is it really is on play live to uh... unfortunately have played it live in a while just because it's tricky with uh... we needed a particular piano to play it that broke uh... but uh... it was when we were playing it it was my favorite to play live cool you mention the people for someone favorite track or favorite album actually it's hard to say tracks with the Beatles uh... revolvers my favorite record yesterday might be my favorite song
14:09i go back and forth between them and a letter to be the voters from a favorite album but i think he jude hejude the hits i expect to be sides of the guys to me jude's the greatest songs of the best crafted pop songs something you guys would ever cover maybe i don't know if i would ever cover people so i feel too well i'm pretty awesome i'll probably do it on a solo i'm here and do it talk poorly behind his back about it uh... speaking of cover songs was placed on from one of the cover records i really like another day in paradise i think part of the summer school too so cool thank you guys want to hear i'd like a personally a fan of part of our but they're really easy to do it to a career
14:54that way and it doesn't sound like it would have ever been a stevi wonder song the way i mean just the way it came out it doesn't so far from you know what it was originally which you know could be a bad thing because it's a great song originally but we totally fucked it up to let me know nothing to be wrong
15:47if she's with me i think the lights to let you know tonight tonight for me it's a similar form of you should part of our talk with the guys from cople and wanted to talk about
18:41a lot of pain on the first record lyrically i don't know if you want to discuss it anymore i'm sure might bring up some things but it's kind of changed on this new record it's a lot more well i'm sure there are breakup songs as well but it's it's a lot less painful are you kind of are you still writing that way uh... is still in there when you write and i think everything you go through um... in your entire life to stick with you sometimes and will come out in your in your art or in your your writing or know what have you i think i think everything your your artists kind of this uh... just collection of feelings and the little intricacies of your uh... spirit that that uh...
19:28come out and all that stuff has an effect on it so i'm sure i might write more songs about those days i mean it's definitely not something i think about every day so uh... but i don't know might have more painful songs people like pain people people pay people pay for pain good money for pain especially in this city uh... uh... not me but i've heard yes this is what i've heard uh... let's play a song of first records something like that because you're talking about it because one here that uh... that's the least painful song on the record yes not it's not painful at all it's a pretty
20:17little of song in fact we heard rumor that it was um... on mtv's next you know scandalous dating show or as to lesbians were making on hot tub so as you're listening to the sun they're gonna be a close second just know that it's not a cute little of song it's all about lesbians and hot tubs or not i like it or not
24:17according to summer again you have the songs written or do you guys write in the studio how does work uh... songs are not totally written scrambling to write songs were beginning the process beginning not scrambling we wouldn't start with the workers to you uh... we're doing a little uh... well usually the most ideas the basic idea start out me uh... brine contribute some uh... some nuggets as well but uh... yet it the idea start out with me and it's usually about a minute long reverse course type thing and then the whole band throws it all together can on the car or is it a back and forth back and forth yeah this
25:02this record probably more piano than the last one last one that had surprising amount of guitar songs on it which i didn't expect from us but it that's happened that way fair enough or do you want to be a lot more groove oriented this one what is it exactly i read that in the air it's in your bio group really yeah that's an arrived and groove or and i don't know if we now we let out that we're going to be good group oriented uh... basic uh... basically um... when when you think of a rock band you think of a band you know a drummer playing eight bars and playing a fill and you know that you know the phrase is turning over every eight measures and this we want to be a lot more atmospheric a lot more
25:52you know if we if we fall into a good groove to to reuse the definition word uh... you found to you know a good group to just let it go and let the still have songs but not feel as much like a rock band i guess as uh... as as much as you would hear like uh... you know like uh... i don't know cigarettes doesn't really sound like a rock band but they are rock band yeah you don't think about rock songs and you think of cigarettes but you never for the most part of the traditional rock instruments piano drums bass guitar fair enough is going to be like more pop-punky or more melodic the slower stuff
26:37you guys are doing even know yet um... that probably slower probably but i think usually we always have one thing in mind when we go to the studio then when we come out of it nothing like what you know it's very true very true probably anything we say now we're gonna go make a really bad record uh... read another you also said the longer you wait to record better song gets it grows and it is more it seems like you guys are just gonna rush this one out kind of that's what you're saying at least so you're not going to really give it a chance that a new approach you know what we're contradicting ourselves uh... well the last the last record was a really quick writing uh... it was
27:22four months of writing and then two weeks of arranging if that four weeks of trying to write that two weeks of really writing uh... so uh... the last one and it came out as a total snapshot of where we were we've been on the road for a really long time we were playing rock clubs it sounds like a rock record so um... so where we really want this record to be uh... a lot more like just some more more like the idea we have in our head rather than just like what we have been practicing because we i mean we won't have to work quite as much as we had
28:09to work when we started recording in motion because at that point we had been on tour for two years straight right now we're just you know we've been out for two months what's your plans when you're not the road just go home and relax relaxer at the air too and then start writing and getting it done so we can be prepared for recording you know what i think we have lots doing at home it's not gonna be it's not gonna be off on the games it's not gonna be all crispers and sugar gliders where's home at life uh... lakeland florida yeah back in florida cool wait you knew you knew lakeland is in florida do you know what i've read up i did some research okay there you go um... was playing on the tune of the record what you want here
28:55of the new record uh... of in motion here choose one that was more yeah that's my favorite one oh yeah we're talking about that's right choose choose the one that was more is only did the sweet dead drums on and um yeah the other piano that we need to play it live broke so here you go yes main i got a way you can
29:41see yeah the guys here from cople and we do this thing every week on the show called five questions five
34:13good questions one word answers um ipod or cds ipod i mean i i but i i buy the cds and then i put them on ipod um we listen to your ipod but i yeah i guess i listen to my ipod but do i appreciate the cds more because they have not work and yeah i still buy cds but i don't listen to them i buy them look at them and then put them on my ipod interesting why don't you just download them straight off iTunes because i like the artwork i like having artwork as well you think that's going to go away as we move into the future probably to the extent yeah next one is linear or cartney micardney yeah macardney oh you never get two macartneys from event yeah well
34:59i mean i think um just listening wise macardney but if i could be one of them i'd probably be the land and and brian would be the macardney for hollywood we're going for halloween this year yeah um brian can release in october he'll be landing i'll be macardney alcohol and marijuana i don't really do either uh i mean alcohol for me if i had the pick one would be alcohol but i'd probably get a headache and then go to bed fair enough um song you've written your most proud of choose the one who loves you more it's probably my favorite one yeah most proud of cool and one word c Oakland i don't think i don't think one word's popular in my head
35:46i said i mean the first word you i thought was jerks uh uh i don't agree with it but that works doesn't doesn't really describe uh musically uh c Oakland uh pop i would say pop but first word that came with my head was melody melodies so melody cool i don't know one song closed set what do you guys want here well uh we could do the single from emotion no no no yeah let's not do that okay what do you want to do what do you want to do check me in the other songs all right here's the single pin your wings uh pin your wings is the single from the record how can we even want to play it
36:33just because i hear it a lot not fair enough you have to play it all the time yeah man you getting sick of it yeah slightly yeah totally fair enough thanks guys appreciate it thanks a lot yeah thank you
