06Day five in north by northeast so many great bands to see we're gonna just go around We're gonna go find some good music because the last night of really just checking new stuff out that I haven't heard before Lakes of Canada. We're gonna go see we're gonna go see the odds who may or may not have a special guest or two or three or four Or five coming on stage with them. We're also well You can see it's nighttime now a little earlier. We saw old man Canyon out in the park and maybe that's where we'll start We're gonna see a whole bunch of great music tonight And let's start in the park because it was cool. It's old man Canyon Finish up tune today. Yeah, it's what did he what was it missing? What did you what did you finish today?
35Well, I think my process a lot of the time is just playing guitar and trying to catch a melody or a phrase And sometimes that's the chorus and when I get that I I know I'm kind of either something to build from that so The song was pretty much finished and I've been kind of toying around with the first verse lyrics and melodies something wasn't working, but I don't know I kind of it's one of those songs I kind of question I don't know, but I I feel like there's there's the right thing somewhere So a lot of searching, but I think I got it today enough to perform anyway whether that's what it is on the album I have no idea, but I'm winging it man Read this book and you're like I need to write a record is that well
58I mean it was so it was a little bit more personal than that So this is personal information. I've dealt with it. So it's not that intense for me anymore But it's pretty intense for most people my mother was murdered in her home Almost four years ago now and when I was clearing out her house. Yeah, I know it's intense. That's why I gave you a warning I was like that's a big thing When I was clearing out her house, she was a big reader She had tons and tons of books and I was a lot of them I was just putting by genre wasn't really looking at them and then I found the handmade sale and It struck me and I had heard of it and I knew Margaret atwood and I thought I should read this And so when I finished clearing out the house, I immediately started reading it and given the subject matter of the book and Those particular events that had happened in my life It really struck me very intensely. I couldn't put it down
44I couldn't stop reading it and I immediately wrote a song about it and then like a month went by and I wrote another song and Then a few months went by and I wrote another song and then after like four or five songs Everyone in the band was like dude you keep writing about this book. I think maybe we're writing a concept album now I think that's what's happening and I was like oh is that a good idea? Should we do that and then we asked a bunch of our sort of hire in the industry friends? They were like dude, that's a fucking idea. You should absolutely do that And so we did and we ran with it and it completely changed our sound we used to be very folk rock and yes We're all standing here being like this is no we thought we're here exactly yeah It's a totally different sound but but I mean we really like it and our fan base seems to really like it as well And I feel like we still kind of hark into our folk rock roots a bit
30We've still got a lot of vocal harmony, but it's a lot more gospel soul now But yeah, the book really influenced us in a big way sonically And we actually got Margaret. I was permission to use the material we sent her a letter and she was like oh, that's great Yeah, go ahead and we haven't sent her the record yet. I'm a little bit nervous about that But yeah, so we're pretty excited about it
