00Yeah, keep busy getting ready for CMW and a little John to across the East I suppose Are you are you working on music cuz from what I what I gather from Twitter I don't know what night you guys are are kind of in and out of I guess your own studio working on stuff Yeah, sure That's good that gives us lots to talk about maybe maybe let's start with the Juneau's because I'll see you guys there
02Yeah, where were you when you heard the folk record nomination where how did that go down? Yeah, I've been to the nominations one in Calgary like six years ago seven years ago Yeah, that was clear. Yeah
54We've done you would you consider the record a folk record or what is what is what is I don't even know why I'm asking you this question We're just gonna throw it out there anyway That's fair. Where do songs start with you like you said you guys are going back into the studio in a couple weeks here to work on some stuff Do you come in with everything kind of written on acoustic or whatnot and then bring it to the band and let everyone kind of fill in their Parts like how does that process work?
41So would you make the record
09Would you take the songs then and just go live off the floor with the band to try and recreate that I feel like how do you go about doing that? I mean obviously overdub the vocals and whatnot but Sure sure but the record What was that? That's all right. I have mine locked out of my room right now. So it's okay
07He doesn't like it when I'm on the phone. He goes a little crazy So I was reading a quote about you saying Dylan's chronicles one of my favorite books to the idea of the responsibility of the songwriter and putting that history in context And I was wondering how do you go if that if that informs your songwriting if that's something Knowing that you're a songwriter and knowing I think I had this conversation with John K. Samson once about Like songwriters writing about their place and time in the world and what's happening now And and I have a feeling that's kind of what that quote goes about. So do you do you take that into into when you Go about writing lyrics and think about the historical context of where we're at now in the world It's interesting. Do you have a do you have a place where you write like do you have a
52Place where you where you feel most comfortable writing or can you are you someone who can kind of just sit anywhere with with a phone and just kind of Write demos Okay, sure. Yeah, yeah So then if you're writing in the van are you bouncing ideas up everyone in the group or you kind of sticking yourself with it with a pen and paper
41Kind of thing. Okay. Why is that why wouldn't you bounce off ideas? And I know that came up kind of crass But I didn't mean it to No, no, no, everyone has a different way of working, right? What what song did you stumble with the most on on the last record or I guess the one the newest record that we can all hear
36Was there one that was really laborious scratching out words here and there and reworking things You're writing about these days what what what themes are we gonna hear on the next record?
55Why why Angelina why does that why do you reprise that song of all the songs and the records why choose to do that one? I always find that interesting when there's a reprise a reprise. I'm not gonna say that word Yeah, I think so too Sorry, I mean, no, I was gonna say finish what you're gonna say. I have a follow-up but finish Damn it. I interrupted it. It was probably gonna be an amazing answer. I'm sorry
44But I was gonna I was gonna ask so do you typically have several versions of songs? I guess while you're arranging them with the band Yes, okay What what's Aaron's last name just so I can get it in the article?
25Shelboring cool I don't want to ask you. Oh, yes five questions. So before I let you go We do something called five questions five quick questions one word answers rotor studio Studio Leonard or McCartney Today when you hear a song what usually hits you first lyrics melody or rhythm song you've written your most proud of Yes, yes, that this would be more than one word of course. Yeah Cool and that'll be on the record I assume
15If it makes a cut yeah And in one word the wooden sky
